Autonomous Driving-5 Years after the Urban Challenge: The Anticipatory Vehicle as a Cyber-Physical System
In November 2007 the international competition DARPA Urban Challenge took place on the former George Airforce Base in Victorville, California to significantly promote the research and development on autonomously driving vehicles for urban environments. In the final race only eleven out of initially 89 competitors participated and “Boss” from Carnegie Mellon University succeeded. This paper summ...
متن کاملCreating a High-Level Control Module for an Autonomous Mobile Robot Operating in an Urban Environment
The DARPA Urban Challenge is a government-sponsored competition scheduled for November 2007. The challenge is to create a fully autonomous vehicle built upon a street-legal frame that can navigate an urban driving environment. Naturally, urban driving environments require the vehicle to obey traffic laws, interact properly with other vehicles on the road, and generally drive much like a human w...
متن کاملTeam AnnieWAY's Autonomous System for the DARPA Urban Challenge 2007
This paper reports on AnnieWAY, an autonomous vehicle that is capable of driving through urban scenarios and that has successfully entered the finals of the DARPA Urban Challenge 2007 competition. After describing the main challenges imposed and the major hardware components, we outline the underlying software structure and focus on selected algorithms. Environmental perception mainly relies on...
متن کاملA Multisensor Multiobject Tracking System for an Autonomous Vehicle Driving in an Urban Environment
This paper presents the tracking system of Boss, Carnegie Mellon University’s winning entry in the DARPA Urban Challenge in 2007. We present the key challenges for implementing the tracking system, the design principles that guided its implementation, the software architecture of the tracking system and the sensor setup used by Boss. The system has been shown to work robustly in many different ...
متن کاملPosition and Orientation Data Requirements for Precise Autonomous Vehicle Navigation
The challenge of navigating an autonomous vehicle over large distances was illustrated in 2005 at the DARPA Grand Challenge when 4 out of 23 Teams successfully completed a 132 mile course within a 10 hour time limit. What the Grand Challenge revealed is that one of the most critical components of a successful autonomous vehicle was the reliability of accurate pose (positioning and orientation e...
